San Lorenzo is a census-designated place (CDP) in Alameda County, California, United States. The population was 21,898 at the 2000 census. Part of a large Spanish land grant prior to the United States' takeover of California in 1848, San Lorenzo was mostly farmland from the 1850s until 1944, when the Bohannon Company built San Lorenzo Village, a tract of two- and three-bedroom homes for workers in the East Bay's war industries, complete with a shopping center. Home construction continued into the 1950s, to satisfy the region's booming need for suburban housing. San Lorenzo is located at 374031N, 12282W (37.675181, -122.133752)GR1.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 7.2 km (2.8 mi). 7.2 km (2.8 mi) of it is land and 0.36% is water. As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 21,898 people, 7,500 households, and 5,677 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 3,052.3/km (7,893.4/mi). There were 7,609 housing units at an average density of 1,060.6/km (2,742.7/mi). The racial makeup of the CDP was 63.32% White, 2.81% Black or African American, 0.89% Native American, 15.48% Asian, 0.48% Pacific Islander, 10.82% from other races, and 6.21% from two or more races. 24.65% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
